Haemorrhoids Hampshire

Haemorrhoids, otherwise known as piles, are swollen blood vessels in or around the rectum and anus. Haemorrhoidal veins sometimes swell when the vein walls become thin, stretched or irritated by passing bowel movements. This condition can be classed in two categories: internal and external.

Internal haemorrhoids do not usually hurt, as there are few pain pain-sensing nerves in the rectum. Indeed bleeding may be the only sign they are there. However, they may enlarge or prolapse and protrude outside the sphincter.

External haemorrhoids meanwhile lie within the actual anus and are usually more uncomfortable. If they prolapse outside with or without passing stool they can be seen and felt. Blood clots can sometimes form within this area and cause an extremely painful condition called thrombosis. When this happens it may turn purple or blue and cause bleeding.
