This is a test that is frequently carried out in the outpatients. It involves the passage of a small telescope into the lower bowel through the bottom. It enables the surgeon to see into the lower bowel (rectum). The test only takes a matter of seconds but during this you may feel the surgeon puffing a small amount of clean air into the bowel. This does give a feeling of slight discomfort; some people liken this to a feeling of needing to go to the toilet. The air is mostly released at the end of the test. This enables the surgeon to examine the rectum in some detail.
